Our Story

How we got started

In 2016, on Shushan Purim, Sasha Parker in Los Angeles started her first round of chemo for breast cancer. When diagnosed, she chose to embody Wonder Woman, the superhero, as a symbol of resilience, inner strength, and superhuman power. Whether or not she felt it, she embraced Wonder Woman’s spirit to help her get through this incredible challenge (she even painted her nails with Wonder Woman designs).

Three months after finishing her treatments, Sasha was connected with Penina and Rivkah, who had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Ironically, she felt hesitant to help other women with cancer, as she was focused on navigating her own challenging journey and didn’t want to confront the pain of others’ experiences. However, despite her initial hesitation, she ended up sharing with them the strength she found in becoming Wonder Woman. Rivkah formed a WhatsApp group called “WonderWomen” with the three of them.

Meanwhile, on the East Coast, Nechama had the idea to start a support group for young Orthodox women going through breast cancer. She and Alizah, who had both been diagnosed with breast cancer, joined forces with the West Coast women, and together, the official WonderWomen group was born. All five women were young when they were diagnosed (ages 24, 29, 29, 37, and 41), were Orthodox, and had little kids at home. The WonderWomen found support and strength in their shared experiences. They laughed, cried, and shared their most personal thoughts, fears, and hopes.

They also exchanged practical and valuable information about treatments and surgeries while providing love and support along the way.
